There is something rather magical about gazing up at the night sky and soaking in the celestial beauty of a sea of glowing stars, scattered clouds and the gorgeous glow of the moon. While the moons lunar energy keeps me grounded, I am also aware of the power behind what hangs in the sky and how it affects my daily life.

The moon is so much more than a glowing orb in the night sky; it is a celestial body that holds much power and symbolism for many cultures and practices. Over time more and more of us are becoming acutely aware and attuned to how the moon affects our moods and how this, in turn, can affect our actions and behaviour. In particular, these internal shifts are subject to change with the waxing and waning of the moon as it goes through its different phases. If the moon has such a pull on our ocean tides, one can only imagine the effect it has on our bodies and minds, when the difference in low and high tides monthly patterns are directly linked to the cycle of the lunar phases.

So what are the different phases, and what do they mean?

The lunar phases can be broken down into four primary cycles each month, and as it alternates between waxing and waning, this makes eight phases in total. The difference between waxing and waning is that waxing means the moon is getting fuller, while waning is decreasing in size. Waxing moons will take on more of a D shape; alternatively, waning moons will look more like a C. While the moon is waxing, and growing in size and strength it's a good idea to focus on things you would like to see grow and thrive positively. Meanwhile, with the waning moon, as it descends into the dark from light, this is a time of letting go and release.

The eight stages can be split into the following categories:

☆ New Moon

☆ Waxing Crescent moon

☆ First Quarter

☆ Waxing Gibbous Moon

☆ Full Moon

☆ Waning Gibbous Moon (also known as the disseminating moon)

☆ Last Quarter

☆ Waning Crescent (or Balsamic moon)

and right back to the New Moon!

New Moon 🌑

New moon, new beginnings, this is the perfect time to begin new ventures and watch them take form as the moon begins its journey to become whole once more. During these times, you might start to make plans for the future and prepare yourself for tackling goals and dreams that you want to achieve in the coming months and throughout the lunar year. Take this time to plant seeds for positive change, and it's also a great time to reflect inwardly and perhaps focus on things you'd like to improve.

Waxing Crescent 🌒

As a slim sliver of the moon begins to take shape, make this a time to move forward with your plans and present your hopes, dreams and ideas, such as the moon's visibility is gradually appearing in the sky

First Quarter 🌓

The moon is half full now, and this might be time for challenges. Much like the moon you might begin to feel stuck and may find yourself doubting ideas, however much like the lunar cycle, you should continue to push on so that you can have the satisfaction of completion and fullness. However, don't feel guilty if these challenges do overthrow you, this would be the best time to let go of old wishes or ideas if you genuinely think it would not be beneficial or healthy to continue.

Waxing Gibbous 🌔

As the moon continues to grow, make sure you are pushing forward and staying on track, whatever area this might be for you. Staying on track doesn't equate to being stagnant or stubborn, don't be afraid to slightly tweak what you were doing if it ultimately gets you where you need to be. The moon is getting closer and closer to being whole once more, and so are you, keep going.

Full Moon 🌕

The most potent phase of the moon, this is a time of abundance, and you might find yourself having stronger emotions or feeling more drained than usual. This period is a time of heightened psychic abilities and fulfilment. Those myths of werewolves changing at the full moon? Well as most folklore, they have their origins. The word lunar originates from Latin term luna, meaning the moon, while lunatic referred to a type of insanity that depended on the phases of the moon. As mentioned earlier, the moon has the power to shift the ocean's tides and with humans being made up of at least 60% water, just imagine what things the moon at it's fullest phase can do to your body and emotions. During this time of the month, crime is usually, and people tend to have their feelings brought more to the surface.

Waning Gibbous 🌖

(also known as Disseminating)

After the full moon, you might find yourself a bit exhausted, let yourself rest and recuperate, self-care is essential no matter the phase the moon is in, but during this time give your body and mind extra support after all the trials the months have thrown at you. You’ve likely exerted a lot of energy, use this a time of reflection and recuperation. The term 'disseminate' means to spread something, this could be seeds of knowledge, what did you learn over the past months, plant those seeds ready for new beginnings by the time the new moon rolls around again.

Last Quarter 🌗

And we are back to the halfway point, let go of anything you are holding on to that doesn’t positively aid you in any way and ask yourself questions to improve and ready yourself for the new cycle which isn't far away. Release and forgive, as the moon decreases in size once again, let things go and make sure to be taking care of yourself and renewing that spent energy.

Waning Crescent 🌘

(or Balsamic)

Time to relax, you made it through an entire lunar cycle, and that in itself is an achievement, you can be proud of your achievements and reflect on what did or didn't go quite right. The term 'Balsamic' originates from the word 'balsam', which pertains to health and healing, so focus on yourself and allow your body and mind time to heal. You can accept what can and can't be, and from alow for much-needed healing.

I believe that the moon truly teaches us something valuable yet straightforward in its phases. It is only from the earth that these phases exist, out in the universe the moon shall forever appear whole despite its varying forms dependant on one's perspective. Quite simply no matter what phase you are currently in, or about to go into, you are no less whole, and much like the moon you are revered highly and are shine throughout all of them.

Thank you for reading and blessed be!
